On any given day, there are between 4 to 5 thousand commerical planes flying at the same time.
Interesting bit of info I got from "United 93" lastnight.

You should try and find the radar from 9/11/01 from when the first plane hit the WTC to the time the last commercial land over the US air space. It's pretty wild to see how many planes were in the air at that time and how fast they got them all landed

It was pretty good. If our military were described from that movie....every country might as well attack us. It was a sad sight how they reacted. The passengers, once they decided to rebel, kicked ass. Had they acted sooner, that plane probably would have made it.
